  • 1851 U of M founded
  • 1887 University YMCA established
  • 1909 U of M Extension Service established by the Minnesota State legislature
  • 1965 General College houses Upward Bound
  • 1967 Council of Liberal Education establishes 'Living and Learning Center' in University College as a service-learning unit
  • 1968 First community clinic course to be offered at the University Law School
  • 1969 School of Public Policy established
  • 1970 Office for Special Learning Opportunities (OSLO) founded to support field experiences
  • 1970 Center for Urban and Regional Affairs (CURA) established
  • 1978 Hubert H. Humphrey Institute on Public Affairs established as a freestanding college
  • 1981 MN Justice Foundation established by Law School students
  • 1981 Minnesota Studies in International Development (MSID) founded as a study abroad program built around an internship in a development agency or project
  • 1987 U of M Twin Cities becomes a member of National Campus Compact
  • 1987 Campus Opportunity Outreach League (COOL) National office housed at U of M
  • 1988 Office of Community Service Activities (OCSA) established by FIPSE grant
  • 1988 University Community Action Network (UCAN) student organization established
  • 1988 Project Public Life - Center for Democracy and Citizenship (CDC) established
  • 1990 Public Achievement established by the Center for Democracy and Citizenship
  • 1991 Council on Liberal Education establishes theme requirements for all undergraduates including the "citizenship and public ethics" theme
  • 1992 OCSA/UCAN restructured and responsibility for service-learning transferred to OSLO. Effort coordinated by a graduate student working part time
  • 1994 First full time coordinator for service-learning hired by the Office for Special Learning Opportunities (CCLC)
  • 1994 University Migrant Project established
  • 1995 Homeless Action Project (HAP) & Literacy Instruction Network in the Community (LINC) student-led programs established
  • 1996 OSLO hires second full time staff member for service-learning
  • 1996 Jane Adams School established on the West Side of Saint Paul
  • 1996 School of Nursing establishes Community University Partnership in Education and Service (CUPES)
  • 1997 America Reads established
  • 1997 Dugsi: Academic Tutoring Program established between Roosevelt High School and the University
  • 1997 University Neighborhood Network established by Neighborhood Planning for Community Revitalization in CURA
  • 1997 School of Nursing places 8 Pediatric Nurse Practitioner students at Anderson School for community based training
  • 1997-2001 Corporation for National Service - Learn and Serve America sponsors National Service-Learning Clearinghouse housed at the University of Minnesota
  • 1998 University service-learning board established
  • 1998 Paulo Freire International Community Service Grant established
  • 1998 Community Empowerment through Learning and Leadership (CELL) established by CCLC
  • 1999 Executive Vice President and Provost Robert Bruininks established the University Community Service Awards
  • 1999 Law Public Service program establish at the University of Minnesota Law School
  • 2000 CCLC office hires AmeriCorps VISTA to coordinate "Get Up, Get Into It, Get Involved" pre-service training and reflection coffee hours
  • 2000 Civic Engagement Task Force established by Provost Bruininks
  • 2000 Sustainable Campus Initiative launched by College of Natural Resources
  • 2000 John Wallace receives the National Campus Compact Thomas Ehrlich Faculty Award for Service-Learning
  • 2000 General College Community Action Writing class taught by Dr. Amy Lee produces first Community Connections newsletter on service-learning
  • 2000-2002 The Academic Health Center professional schools begin to expand their participation in community-based learning efforts
  • 2000 Service-Learning House established as a living learning community in Centennial Hall
  • 2001 CCLC receives funding from Vice-provost for third full time staff for a 3 year position to expand SL courses, as well as to implement Faculty Fellows curriculum development grant program
  • 2001 Designing Research for Change Conference leads to the establishment of GRASS Routes
  • 2002 CUPES restructured and becomes part of the Academic Health Center
  • 2002 English and Sociology Departments participate in the National Campus Compact Engaged Department Institute
  • 2002 Street Law Program is formally introduced into the Law curriculum
  • 2002 University Council on Public Engagement established
  • 2002 Four University of Minnesota Twin Cities students selected as Fellows to participate in the National Student Civic Engagement Campaign by Minnesota Campus Compact
