Service-Learning Expectations
for Students, Faculty and Instructors, Community Partners and the Career and Community Learning Center Service-Learning Staff

Students are expected to:
  • Be prompt, willing, respectful and positive at the placement site.
  • Complete the necessary paperwork as directed by the instructor, community organization and CCLC.
  • Fulfill all agreed upon duties and responsibilities at the community agency.
  • Provide feedback about the service experience and its relevance to the course material.
  • Actively participate in course discussions.
  • Be open to learning about cultures and lifestyles different from your own.
  • Speak with the supervisor and/or instructor if uncomfortable or uncertain about what you are to do.
  • Respect the confidentiality of the individuals you work with at the organization.
  • Participate in the evaluation process.
  • Provide copies of reflection papers or final projects to the community organization supervisor as requested.
Faculty and Instructors are expected to:
  • Describe the service-learning activity and its relation to the course objectives in the course syllabus, and facilitate activities that will prepare students for their service-learning experience.
  • Familiarize themselves with the service sites and monitor student progress through discussions, journal assignments, progress reports or individual consultations.
  • Have students complete all necessary paperwork for the organization and CCLC.
  • Provide individual and/or group forums for students to reflect on their learning.
  • Complete paperwork and attend meetings sponsored by CCLC.
Community Partners are expected to:
  • Orient students to the organization's mission and goals so that they can better understand their role within the agency.
  • Provide work that is significant and challenging to the student.
  • Provide the training, supervision, feedback and resources necessary for student success in the service-learning experience.
  • Ensure a safe work environment for the student to perform service.
  • Provides accessible contact person for the student, instructor and CCLC.
  • Clearly communicate tasks, responsibilities and expectations of the students, including an understanding designated supervisor should give each student a clear understanding of the limits of the student's authority and responsibility, and if these limits are reached, provide instructions on how to alert a staff person and whom to alert.
  • Give students procedures to follow on how to report uncomfortable situations, harassment, suspected abuse, and other problems at the site.
  • Provide the CCLC with initial and regularly updated position descriptions.
  • Recognize and accept their role as co-educators in the service-learning process by engaging students in conversations that promote critical thinking skill development.
  • Maintain in good communication with CCLC and participate in meetings held by CCLC.
  • Provide evaluative feedback to benefit all parties.
Service-Learning Staff in CCLC are expected to:
  • Provide support and assistance with problem solving for situations that occur as a result of University of Minnesota students working at the community organization.
  • Maintain good communication with faculty, instructors and community organizations.
  • Support faculty, instructors and community organizations understand the logistical issues related to service-learning.
  • Promote the concept of "co-educators" in service-learning with faculty and community partners to support the reciprocal nature of service-learning.
  • Provide students and faculty with information about the community organizations associated with their service-learning course and the service-learning process.
  • Maintain a listing of current service-learning courses and faculty for organizations and students.
  • Coordinate evaluation processes for service-learning partners.
