Emma
EMMA
Expertise/Area of Interest: Immigration, politics, youth, and organizing for peace
Year in School: Sophomore
Major: Individualized degree in regional studies of Latin American and the Middle East, with a minor in Spanish
Community Involvement Experience: I'm currently volunteering with the Minnesota Immigrant Freedom Network, where I work with youth on an immigration history video project, and Youthrive, an organization that organizes peace conferences for youth in the Midwest.

Quote: "I do volunteer work because I believe that it is an important part of my education and because I want to help solve the problems that I see in the world. I love meeting new people and working with them to make just changes in our communities. "

Anthony
ANTHONY
Expertise/Area of Interest: Youth, Queer/GLBTA issues, and the multiple identities of queer/GLBTA youth of color.
Year in School: Junior
Major: Individualized Degree in Youth Studies, Social Justice, and GLBT Studies
Community Involvement: I currently advise Edison High School's Gay Straight Alliance, in the past I have done work with Phillips Community Television, the Minnesota Schools Outreach Coalition, and the Gay, Lesbian, Straight Education Network.

Quote: I do community service because I feel it is important in creating a strong and connected community committed to change. Advising gives me a chance to bring more students into community service and help them discover the benefits.

Allison
MEREDITH
Interest/Expertise: Environmental sustainability, arts, housing, adoption.
Year in School: 4th
Major: Architecture, minors in Spanish and Sustainability studies
Community Involvement: I have done a variety of volunteering, some long term, some short. The organizations I have been most involved with are Habitat for Humanity, Free Arts Minnesota, People Serving People, and Children's Home Society and Family Services. I will soon be working with Aprendamos Computacion through a service-learning class.

Quote: The best way for a community to grow is to give everyone a chance to be involved. Through volunteering students can apply the knowledge that they've acquired from their education to something bigger than themselves and at the same time learn more about the world around them. As an adviser I hope to make this more feasible for other students by finding organizations that they can contribute to.

Tyler
TYLER
Interest/Expertise: Youth, Education, Homelessness, Environmental Sustainability, and Cultural Exchange
Year in School: Junior
Major: Outdoor Education
Community Involvement: I am currently on The Youth Farm and Market Project’s Board of Directors. I have worked at Youth Farm for 7 years focusing on Urban Agriculture, Youth Organizing, and Cultural Nutrition. I have tutored at Oh Day Aki Charter School in Dinkytown and at the Jerry Gamble Boy’s and Girl’s Club in North Minneapolis.

Quote: Students benefit greatly from working with mission based organizations. Being a Peer Advisor is enjoyable because I help students learn about the great organizations outside the University that match their interests and passions. Each of the Twin Cities’ neighborhoods has something unique to offer to all educational emphasis.
